Do You Believe in Magic?

Do you believe in magic?

I don’t mean the slight of hand kind performed by a magician. I mean the kind of magic that results in unexpected delights, serendipities and lovely coincidences.

You know, when you’re thinking of a friend and minutes later they call or text you.

Or you’re wishing that you had more time on your calendar and suddenly a bunch of meetings are cancelled.

Or you go to get your car serviced expecting a big charge but instead you don’t even have to take out your credit card (this specifically happened to me last week!)

I bet that you have experienced millions of examples like this in your life.

But tell me, did you notice them?

If you did notice them, did you pause, smile and acknowledge to yourself that something lovely just happened?

If you did pause to notice, did you also let it hit you that these things happen to you all the time?

Magic shows up in your life every single day.

The other day I looked up and out the window just in time to see a cat sprint up a tree after a beautiful red cardinal (don’t worry, the cardinal escaped!). Magic.

A few weeks ago I ordered tacos for myself for dinner. It had been a long week and I wanted to treat myself. When I got home and opened the bag there was a full order of guacamole and warm tortilla chips at no extra charge to me. Ummm…bonus guacamole? Magic.

I bought a pretty pink sweater on sale and happened to try it on with the oldest jeans in my closet - the outfit it is pretty much perfection.  Magic!

There is so much magic around us every day. We just haven’t practiced noticing it.

Instead we practice pointing out what didn’t go our way. The traffic on the way to our meeting, the waiter bringing the wrong order, our kid being home sick from school. We hop on the phone with our closest and vent about what a bad day we’re having.

Have you ever called a friend or family member just to tell them about the wonderful coincidences you experienced that day?

What would life look like if we spent our days celebrating all the magic?

Let’s get real. It’s all a crapshoot whether things go well or not. But we tend to only pay attention to when things don’t go well and take the rest for granted.

You know what happens when you pay attention to the magic?

  1. You instantly start to feel better about your life because you’re leaning into all the good things that are happening to you every day.

  2. You become open to receiving more magic. You become a match for magic to come to you.

This week, I invite you to pay attention to the magic in your life. Pause in the moment, smile to yourself and celebrate it. Take note of it (on paper!). Tell someone close to you. See how life feels when you focus on the magic.

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
– Roald Dahl
